Outokumpu Oyj Reports Net Loss and Decreased Sales for 2023
Stainless steel producer Outokumpu Oyj reported a net loss of EUR 111 million for 2023, a significant drop from a profit of EUR 1,086 million in 2022. The company's sales also declined.

Outokumpu Oyj, a global leader in sustainable stainless steel, reported a net loss of EUR 111 million for the full year 2023. This marks a substantial downturn from the EUR 1,086 million profit recorded in 2022. The company's sales for the year decreased to EUR 6,961 million, down from EUR 9,494 million in the previous year.
The fourth quarter of 2023 proved particularly challenging, with sales amounting to EUR 1,513 million and a net loss of EUR 242 million. Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) for the quarter stood at a negative EUR 314 million. Return on Capital Employed (ROCE), a key profitability metric, was -2.1% for the full year.
Stainless steel deliveries for the year totaled 1,906 thousand tonnes, a decrease from 2,106 thousand tonnes in 2022. The decline in deliveries and overall weaker market conditions, influenced by fluctuating metal and energy prices and reduced demand, contributed to the company's reduced financial performance.
Total capital employed at the end of 2023 was EUR 4,204 million. The company's performance reflects broader trends within the metals industry, with a focus on navigating challenging market dynamics.
