Outokumpu promotes duplex stainless steel for storage tanks
Outokumpu Oyj, a leading stainless steel producer, highlights the suitability of duplex stainless steels for large storage tanks. The materials' strength and corrosion resistance offer cost savings and extended lifespan.

Finnish steel company Outokumpu Oyj is promoting the use of duplex stainless steels for the construction of large storage tanks. The company states that these materials offer significant advantages over traditional alternatives, including superior strength which allows for thinner walls, leading to reduced material costs.
Duplex stainless steels combine the beneficial properties of both ferritic and austenitic stainless steels. High levels of chromium and nitrogen, often with molybdenum, provide effective resistance against both localized and uniform corrosion. This characteristic reduces maintenance needs and eliminates the requirement for coatings. Furthermore, their lower nickel content contributes to price stability.
Outokumpu emphasizes that the high strength and corrosion resistance of duplex steels make them a cost-effective choice compared to lower-strength stainless steels or coated carbon steels. Their good resistance to stress corrosion cracking is particularly important for tank applications.
The company offers a range of duplex steel grades, such as LDX 2101 and SAF 2507, suitable for various applications and environments. Outokumpu supplies these materials in different plate widths, enabling the design and fabrication of efficient tank structures with minimized welding.
