Outokumpu receives ISSF industry awards for sustainability and technology

The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) recognized Outokumpu on May 24, 2018, with a gold-level Sustainability Award for its implementation of a pelletizing method at its Sheffield melt shop in the UK. The process, introduced in 2016, allows the facility to process light stainless steel scrap into dense pellets by removing surface oils and coolants.

Previously, light scrap was underutilized due to its low density and the safety risks associated with organic contaminants, which caused furnace emissions and extended processing times. The pelletizing unit mitigates these issues, allowing for more efficient furnace charging and reduced environmental impact. This adjustment contributes to shorter tap-to-tap times and improved material quality.

In addition to the sustainability accolade, Outokumpu received a silver medal for New Technology regarding a weldable steel-polymer sandwich structure used in car body manufacturing. The company also earned a bronze medal for its efforts in enhancing employee safety awareness. The awards were presented during the ISSF Annual Conference in Shanghai.
