Outokumpu showcases integrated steel production at Tornio site
Outokumpu Oyj presented its integrated production process at the Tornio facility, which covers everything from chrome ore mining to finished stainless steel products. The company highlighted efficiency and recycling.

Helsinki – Metals company Outokumpu Oyj, on October 7, 2015, provided an overview of its integrated production site in Tornio, Finland, one of the largest stainless steel manufacturing facilities globally. The facility manages the entire production chain, starting from chrome ore extraction at the Kemi mine to the creation of finished steel products.
The Tornio site operates in conjunction with the nearby Kemi mine, which supplies the ferrochrome feedstock essential for stainless steel production. Outokumpu emphasized that this integrated approach minimizes transportation costs and enhances energy efficiency by allowing molten ferrochrome to be directly fed into the melting furnaces.
Outokumpu also highlighted the Tornio facility's significant role in recycling. In 2014, the plant utilized nearly one million tons of recycled steel in its stainless steel production, with the company stating that approximately 90 percent of its steel output incorporates recycled materials.
Substantial investments have been made to develop the Tornio site and Kemi mine over the years, increasing production capacity and optimizing processes. The facility directly employs over 2,150 individuals, with an estimated indirect employment impact of 8,000 jobs in the surrounding region.
