Outokumpu to Supply Low-Carbon Stainless Steel for Alstom Metro Cars

Steel manufacturer Outokumpu has entered into a partnership agreement with mobility technology company Alstom. Under the agreement, Outokumpu will supply low-carbon stainless steel for Alstom's latest generation of Metropolis metro cars, with initial deliveries expected to start in 2026.

The collaboration will see Outokumpu provide its Circle Green stainless steel, which boasts a carbon footprint up to 93% lower than the global industry average. This partnership supports the climate targets of both companies and contributes to Europe's goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

"Stainless steel is a vital material for transportation solutions aimed at reducing emissions. We are excited to take the next step with Alstom to support our customers' decarbonization journey," said Rolf Schencking, President of Outokumpu's Business Line Advanced Materials. He noted that the Alstom contract represents the largest volume agreement for Outokumpu in the mobility sector.

Alstom will utilize Outokumpu's low-carbon steel for the exterior of its metro cars, aligning with its goal to reduce emissions from procured goods and services by 30% by 2030. Outokumpu's Circle Green is described as the first product of its kind globally with a significantly reduced carbon footprint and offers product-specific footprint calculations.
