Outokumpu's Kemi mine to launch circular economy ecosystem

Outokumpu's Kemi mine, in collaboration with the EU-funded Lapland Mining Hub project and Digipolis, is launching a data-driven circular economy ecosystem. The initiative aims to convert the mine's side streams, such as waste rock and tailings, into valuable raw materials. This effort seeks to reduce the consumption of virgin natural resources and establish a European model for utilizing mining side streams.

The project intends to create a long-term framework where these side streams can be utilized on an industrial scale, fostering new business opportunities both within the Lapland region and internationally. The Kemi mine annually generates nearly three million tonnes of side streams, for which innovative applications are being explored, including use in construction materials, low-carbon cement alternatives, carbon sequestration, and energy storage.

"The utilization of side streams is no longer just an environmental act, but part of competitiveness and supply security. Our Kemi mine is the only chromium mine in the EU and plays a strategic role in ensuring critical mineral self-sufficiency," stated Martti Sassi, President for Business Area Ferrochrome at Outokumpu. He highlighted that over 95% of Outokumpu's raw material input is already recycled.

The project will generate transparent data regarding the quantity, quality, and suitability of various side streams for potential partners. The model will initially be piloted at the Kemi mine before being considered for expansion to other mining areas in Lapland and potentially across Europe. The scientific and technological foundation of the ecosystem is supported by strategic cooperation with research institutions like the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.
