More than 300 neutron researchers gathered in Lund, Sweden, for the joint European Spallation Source (ESS) and Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) User Meeting, held for the first time in Lund.

The three-day conference served as a platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange among European scientists from academia and industry. Attendees presented the latest progress enabled by neutrons in fields such as life sciences, environmental research, smart materials, and energy solutions, alongside updates on the status and future opportunities for both facilities.

This year's meeting in Lund offered participants a firsthand look at the ESS research facility, including tours of the accelerator and target areas. Poster sessions allowed for detailed discussions on ongoing progress and advancements in instrumentation, with facility staff providing explanations and answering questions.

"It is a great pleasure to welcome neutron researchers from all over the world to Lund and to ESS," stated Helmut Schober, ESS Director General. "ESS's unique tools and performance, coupled with a strong scientific community and enhanced collaboration, provide the necessary conditions for Europe to maintain its leadership in this crucial research field."

Discussions covered a range of scientific topics, including mRNA technology, the function of proteins in the SARS-CoV-2 virus, carbon capture, superconducting materials, batteries, fuel cells, and Martian meteorites. The ESS-ILL User Meetings are held every two years to foster scientific exchange and collaboration.
