Over 90 Percent of Young People Want Their Own Car
A representative survey commissioned by DEVK Versicherungen reveals that 93.7% of young drivers desire their own vehicle. Price is the primary consideration when choosing car insurance.

Obtaining a driver's license remains highly sought after among young adults, despite the rise of alternative mobility options and increasing costs. A representative survey conducted by Civey in September 2024 on behalf of DEVK Versicherungen indicates that 93.7% of young drivers (under 25, with or soon to obtain a license) wish to own their own car.
The survey, which polled 1,000 young adults, highlights the strong desire for car ownership among Generation Z. While the prevalence of driver's licenses among 17-20 year olds has declined since 2012, likely due to higher expenses, the license remains a top aspiration. A significant 28.6% of those under 25 acquired their license at age 17 and participated in supervised driving until their 18th birthday, a figure even higher in rural areas (35.4%).
When young drivers consider car insurance, price emerges as the most critical factor. A substantial 72.1% of respondents cited price as their primary concern. Customer service was also a significant consideration at 52.6%. Proximity to physical branches and online service availability were valued, though brand recognition was less important.
DEVK offers several incentives for young drivers to reduce their car insurance costs. Discounts are available for supervised driving at 17. Furthermore, if a family holds multiple policies with DEVK, young drivers can benefit from discounts that may lower premiums by up to 40%. These benefits, such as the "Junge-Leute-Vorteil" (Young People's Advantage), aim to make car ownership financially accessible for younger individuals.
