Oxford Medical Products Receives £1.25M Grant for Weight-Loss Treatment Trials

Oxford Medical Products (OMP) has been awarded a £1.25 million grant from Innovate UK, the UK's innovation agency, to support the initial human clinical trials of its Sirona weight-loss treatment. The company is collaborating with University Hospital Southampton (UHS) NHS Foundation Trust to conduct these studies.

Sirona, a hydrogel-based therapy, is designed to facilitate weight loss by reducing appetite. The treatment involves swallowing a pill that rapidly expands in the stomach, creating a feeling of fullness. This approach aims to address the significant global challenge of obesity, affecting 1.9 billion people, where existing treatments are often too costly or resource-intensive.

OMP's objective is to provide an accessible and effective solution for individuals with limited weight-management options. The grant from Innovate UK is crucial for advancing the Sirona treatment through its development stages.

"Our aim is to develop a weight-loss solution that empowers people to successfully lose weight and maintain a healthy weight long term," said OMP CEO Camilla Easter. "This Innovate UK grant helps to support the later phase of our pilot clinical trial, ensuring the right data is generated to allow OMP to accelerate towards pivotal trials and regulatory approval."
