Ozinga Opens New Low-Carbon Cement Mill
Ozinga has opened a new, large-scale low-carbon cement mill in East Chicago, Indiana. The facility will produce one million tons of slag cement annually.

Ozinga has officially inaugurated a new low-carbon cement mill in East Chicago, Indiana. The facility, the largest of its kind in North America, is expected to bolster the domestic supply chain for building materials and advance infrastructure innovation in the United States.
The state-of-the-art plant will produce one million tons of slag cement annually. Slag cement, a byproduct of steelmaking, significantly reduces the carbon footprint associated with traditional Portland cement, by up to 80%. The mill's strategic location provides direct access to rail, water, and highway routes, enabling efficient distribution across the Midwest.
The new facility addresses a growing demand for sustainable and cost-effective construction materials. Recent supply constraints have impacted the U.S. construction industry, and Ozinga's investment aims to stabilize the market by increasing domestic capacity. The plant will produce slag cement compliant with industry standards, as well as proprietary blends under Ozinga's CarbonSense™ brand.
The mill is projected to offset over 700,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, comparable to removing more than 150,000 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles from the road each year. Ozinga is a fifth-generation, family-owned company providing concrete, bulk materials, and construction solutions, employing over 2,000 people across more than 100 ready-mix sites in multiple U.S. states.
