Pacific Mind Health Releases Guide for Adults With ADHD on Rejection Sensitivity

Southern California-based behavioral health practice Pacific Mind Health has released a free resource aimed at adults with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The "Managing Rejection-Sensitive Dysphoria Guide" is designed to help individuals identify, understand, and manage what is described as one of the condition's least discussed yet most disruptive traits: an extreme emotional response to real or perceived criticism or rejection.

This condition, known as rejection-sensitive dysphoria (RSD), is most commonly associated with ADHD but can also appear alongside autism, social anxiety, and trauma histories. Veronica Calkins, LCSW, supervising clinical psychotherapist at Pacific Mind Health, stated that naming rejection-sensitive dysphoria can be the first real relief for patients who have long experienced intense emotional reactions.

Emotional dysregulation is prevalent in ADHD, affecting up to 70% of adults with the condition, according to the American Journal of Psychiatry. However, it is not part of the formal diagnostic criteria for ADHD, leading many to go years without understanding the root of their experiences. RSD can manifest behaviors such as withdrawal from relationships, school, and career opportunities, or through physical symptoms like nausea.

The free guide provides practical steps for identifying common signs of RSD, understanding its connection to ADHD and other conditions, and offers grounding techniques and communication approaches. It also outlines potential treatment pathways, including therapy and medication management.
