Packed Planet Deploys Smart Storage Units Across East Coast Portfolio
Facility management firm Packed Planet has integrated StorageDefender technology across its 47-site portfolio to provide real-time tenant monitoring and generate recurring revenue.

Packed Planet Self Storage Solutions has completed the deployment of StorageDefender smart units across its entire East Coast portfolio. The technology provides tenants with real-time visibility into activity within their storage units while creating a new recurring revenue stream for facility owners.
The rollout follows a four-facility pilot program launched in January 2026. Following positive tenant adoption rates, where seven out of ten new customers opted for the smart unit service between July and September 2026, the company decided to scale the platform to all 47 of its managed locations.
Packed Planet uses a remote management model, and the integration allows for centralized reporting through a web management portal. According to Director of Operations Kelley Styer, the system provides tenants with peace of mind by enabling immediate notifications regarding unit activity. This modernization effort is part of the company's broader strategy to use technology to drive facility performance.
Ranked 33rd on the 2026 Inside Self-Storage list of top operators, Packed Planet continues to manage its portfolio from its Norfolk, Virginia headquarters. The company intends to maintain its focus on integrating digital solutions to improve operational efficiency and the customer experience.
