Palmetto Publishing releases children's book on disability by Dr. Nakia Wilson
Palmetto Publishing has launched "Meet Uncle Tinkums," a new children's book by Dr. Nakia Wilson that explores communication and family bonds through the lens of disability.

Charleston-based Palmetto Publishing has released "Meet Uncle Tinkums," a picture book written by Dr. Nakia Wilson and illustrated by Arin Wilson. The title is the first in a planned series aimed at readers between the ages of four and eight.
The story follows two sisters from Texas who maintain a relationship with their uncle in California through daily phone calls. As the uncle uses a wheelchair and does not communicate through spoken language, the narrative focuses on the sisters' inquiries and their learning process regarding how he interacts with the world. The book aims to present disability as a natural aspect of family life rather than a formal lesson.
Dr. Nakia Wilson, an educator and consultant with two decades of experience in community service and foster care, wrote the book to address the need for diverse representation in children's literature. She stated that the goal is to highlight that meaningful communication is not limited to verbal language.
"Meet Uncle Tinkums" was published on October 27, 2026, and is currently available through online retailers including Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
