Panasonic Industry Europe has launched a new 40A HE-R relay, specifically designed for three-phase systems and suitable for electric vehicle charging stations. This marks the world's first PCB relay capable of acting as the main switching element in three-phase applications.

The relay is intended for Mode 3 AC charging stations up to 22kW. Each of its four normally open contacts is rated to carry and switch 40A within the series' typical temperature range of up to +85°C. An optional NC contact, functioning as a mirror contact according to IEC 60947-4-1, switches signal loads up to 10mA / 5VDC.

The HE-R relay measures 35 x 58 x 47mm and features minimal power consumption of 490mW due to pulse width modulation. This low power dissipation reduces heat generation, often eliminating the need for additional ventilation.

Panasonic states that the HE-R's size, performance, and robustness allow for the implementation of three-phase systems with a single relay directly on the PCB. This is beneficial for wall-mounted charging boxes, public charging stations, and other industrial automation and energy harvesting applications.
