Pantone Adds 224 New Colors to Matching System

Pantone Matching System has expanded its palette with the addition of 224 new colors. The company states that the new shades represent a shift in design trends toward bolder hues and unusual combinations, marking the first expansion since 2022.

The new colors are available as a color bridge guide set and as spot color chip sets. The Carlstadt, New Jersey-based company now offers nearly 9,000 colors, developed based on insights from its global team of "color anthropologists." This expansion signals a move away from minimalism toward intentional maximalism, favoring richer saturation and higher contrast.

Pantone notes that younger generations, such as Gen Z, utilize and respond to color differently than previous cohorts accustomed to neutrals and muted tones. The influence of Gen Z is significant, as they seek more impactful shades to stand out in digital environments.

Furthermore, the release of these new colors indicates a growing need for combinations that perform well online. The company suggests that color is increasingly used as an expression of visual identity and a communication tool, rather than purely for decoration. Previously dominant neutral tones are ceding ground to more expressive and bright alternatives.
