Parliament Passes Health Insurance Reform to Stabilize Premiums

The German Bundestag is scheduled to pass legislation this Friday to reform the country's statutory health insurance system (Gesetzliche Krankenversicherung, GKV). The CDU/CSU parliamentary group stated that the reform's primary objective is to ensure premium stability amidst challenging economic conditions.

The reform involves significant savings measures, amounting to billions of euros, within the health insurance system. Albert Stegemann, the deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, emphasized that efforts were made to ensure these savings do not disproportionately burden low-income individuals or those with chronic illnesses.

A key focus of the reform was on families. While original proposals suggested reducing coverage for certain family members, a compromise was reached to maintain spousal or partner insurance for children up to the age of twelve. Previously, this coverage was intended to be reduced for children over seven.

Stegemann indicated that the reform aims to alleviate financial pressure on employees and employers and provide a positive signal to the broader economy. He described the legislative effort as demonstrating the group's capacity to enact necessary reforms even under difficult circumstances.
