Party Fundraising: Democrats Have Candidate Cash, Republicans Have Elon Musk
As the midterm elections approach, Democratic candidates are outraising their Republican rivals. Republicans are relying on significant outside spending, with Elon Musk emerging as a key individual donor.

Democratic candidates have outraised their Republican counterparts in key Senate and House races ahead of the November 3 midterm elections, according to recent filings with the Federal Election Commission (FEC).
However, Republicans are offsetting this gap with a surge of outside money from super PACs. The Senate Leadership Fund, a major Republican group, reported raising $272.9 million in the third quarter. A significant portion of this outside funding is linked to Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who has contributed over $276 million to federal groups this cycle, including substantial support for a Texas Senate race.
This influx of cash from wealthy donors and independent expenditure groups aims to counter the direct fundraising success of Democratic candidates. While Democratic nominees are showing strength in candidate-controlled funds, the substantial spending by Republican super PACs could significantly influence battleground races.
The data highlights differing fundraising strategies, with Democrats leveraging candidate-level contributions and Republicans increasingly relying on external groups and large individual donations to compete financially.
