Pathé launches hypnosis experiment to 'reset' viewer memory of classic films
French film distributor Pathé is conducting a trial involving 30 participants who will undergo hypnosis to attempt to erase their memories of specific films and experience them anew.

French film production and distribution company Pathé has initiated a project titled "Pathé Rewind," an experimental initiative exploring the intersection of hypnosis and cinema. In collaboration with hypnotist Victor Kraemer, 30 selected participants will undergo individual hypnotherapy sessions with the stated goal of suppressing their recollection of well-known films, such as "The Matrix" or "Interstellar," to allow them to view the works as if for the first time.
The experiment is scheduled to take place on November 9 at the Pathé Buitenhof theater in The Hague. Participants, selected based on their viewing preferences and motivations, will undergo a second round of hypnosis immediately preceding the screening of their chosen film.
Pathé has issued explicit disclaimers regarding the project, stating that the company bears no responsibility for the efficacy or long-term effects of the hypnosis sessions. The initiative is being framed as an exploratory study into whether hypnotic techniques can create a novel cinematic experience, though the company makes no guarantees regarding the outcome.
