Patreon, the platform for creators, has reduced its workforce by 20%, impacting approximately 93 employees. CEO Jack Conte announced the layoffs on Thursday in a memo to staff, which was subsequently shared online.
Conte stated that while Patreon's core business remains strong, the adjustments are necessary to address market shifts and stabilize the company's cost structure. He clarified that the layoffs are not a result of AI replacing human employees. "AI has fundamentally transformed the tech industry," Conte wrote, but emphasized that AI tools do not substitute for human creativity, judgment, or the desire for human connection, which are foundational to Patreon's strategy.
However, Conte acknowledged that advancements in AI and data have influenced how the company operates and organizes itself. Beyond the headcount reduction, Patreon is also restructuring its operations and flattening its organizational chart to focus on key priorities.
Employees affected by the layoffs will receive a minimum of 16 weeks of severance pay, with an additional week for each year of service. They will also retain healthcare coverage through the end of the year and receive a $1,500 stipend for educational expenses.
