Patria-led FAMOUS consortium secures €79 million EU grant for combat capability development
The EU's European Defence Fund has awarded an additional €79 million to the Patria-led FAMOUS consortium for phase three of its combat capability development project. The funding aims to enhance interoperability and reduce life cycle costs for armored vehicles.

The FAMOUS 3 consortium, led by defense company Patria, has advanced its development of European combat capabilities with additional European Union funding. The European Commission approved the consortium's proposal for the third phase of the project on April 15, 2026. The EU's contribution totals €79 million, part of a larger €115 million budget for this phase. Finland continues to serve as the lead state for the project, with Patria acting as the industrial coordinator.
The FAMOUS project has progressed through multiple phases, with the successful completion of the first and second phases leading to the development of the Patria TRACKX armored tracked vehicle. This new platform is designed to enhance military mobility and combat effectiveness on tracks, a capability currently in high demand across European armed forces.
The third phase, FAMOUS 3, will focus on maximizing synergies, standardization, commonalities, and interoperability among different vehicle types. It also aims to lower the life cycle costs for all-terrain and light armored vehicles. By leveraging the expertise of Patria and its consortium partners, the project will further develop the technologies and performance of future armored vehicles to meet the evolving needs of EU customers and improve ground combat capabilities.
"Rapidly developing European combat capability is one of the Commission's core missions, supported concretely through joint programs via EDF funding. The FAMOUS program has been highly successful and results-driven since its inception," stated Jussi Järvinen, Executive Vice President of Patria's Protected Mobility business area. He highlighted the Patria TRACKX as a unique solution for Europe's armored mobility needs, with serial production scheduled to commence in 2027. The consortium is also expanding to include new countries and companies.
Since its launch in 2021, the FAMOUS program, encompassing its previous two phases, has secured over €100 million in funding from the EU, supplemented by an additional €20 million from participating nations. The initiative has seen participation from 20 countries and over 50 leading European defense companies.
