Patria MUSCL enhances air defence situational picture with passive radar

Defense company Patria has introduced the MUSCL system, a passive radar technology designed to enhance air defence situational awareness. The system allows for the detection of aerial objects without emitting signals, making it virtually undetectable by adversaries. It is particularly effective at identifying small, low-flying targets that are challenging for conventional radar systems.

Traditional active radars are vulnerable due to their detectability, posing risks in conflict scenarios. Patria's MUSCL system addresses this by utilizing existing FM radio and digital television broadcast signals. Instead of transmitting, it processes reflected signals from targets, rendering it invisible to signal intelligence and anti-radiation missiles.

The MUSCL system comprises an antenna array, receiver, and signal processing servers. It is capable of simultaneously tracking over one hundred targets at distances of several hundred kilometers. The system can also classify identified objects, including stealth aircraft, which it detects more effectively than traditional radars.

Patria states that the MUSCL system's modularity and use of commercial technologies allow for flexible upgrades as technology advances. The system is suitable for both mobile and fixed deployments and can be utilized for military surveillance, border control, and critical infrastructure protection.
