Finnish defense and technology company Patria Oyj has inaugurated a new manufacturing plant for military vehicles in Valmiera, Latvia. The cornerstone for the facility was laid on October 7, with completion anticipated for the third quarter of 2027.

The plant will produce Patria 6x6 armored personnel carriers and support the assembly and maintenance of General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS) Mednieks infantry fighting vehicles intended for Latvia. It will also offer full lifecycle support for these vehicles.

Patria Oyj is investing nearly €8 million in the project, which includes European Union funding. The initiative is designed to enhance Latvia's domestic defense industry capacity, ensure supply chain security, and contribute to the military capabilities of both Latvia and its allies.

Latvian Minister of Defence Raivis Melnis highlighted the facility's importance in developing the nation's defense sector. "Our goal is to build local industrial capacity that allows for the production and maintenance of armored vehicles on-site, thereby strengthening supply security and resilience," Melnis stated.

Patria's President and CEO Panu Routila affirmed the company's long-term commitment to supporting Latvia's defense industry. "By strengthening local production, developing expertise, and involving Latvian companies in the defense supply chain, we are building industrial capabilities that enhance both supply security and long-term resilience," Routila added.
