Patria's Weapons Manufacturing: From Cannons to Computers

<h2>Patria's History in Weapons Manufacturing</h2> Patria, a Finnish defense and aerospace company, has manufactured heavy armament, including mortars and cannons, for over 80 years. The company's origins trace back to Tampella, which began producing 81 mm mortars in the 1930s based on a design improved by Hans Otto Donner. This marked the beginning of serial production for heavy weaponry in Finland. <h2>Post-War Development and Modernization</h2> During World War II, Tampella focused on producing anti-tank guns and field howitzers, alongside maintaining existing equipment. In the post-war era, the company developed new systems, such as a 155 mm cannon that found international markets. The 155K83 cannon, currently in service with the Finnish Defence Forces, is based on a prototype developed by Chief Designer Heikki Collanus in the late 1970s. <h2>Transition to Advanced Systems</h2> In the 1990s, Patria began a collaboration with BAE Systems Hägglunds to develop the AMOS mortar system. Today, the company independently produces the Nemo mortar system, designed for light and mobile platforms. The Nemo system allows for accurate fire-on-the-move capabilities and benefits from its lightweight design, weighing 1700 kg. <h2>Future Challenges in Armament</h2> Patria's current focus in weapon system development is on maintainability, software compatibility, and product lifecycle support, moving beyond traditional manufacturing. Test firings, once conducted in fields near Tampere, now take place in designated defense force areas. The maximum range for mortars is approximately 10 km, while cannons can reach over 40 km.
