Payment processors tighten risk controls in 2026

Major payment processors, including Stripe, PayPal, and Shopify, are implementing stricter risk management protocols in 2026. This shift has led to a surge in account shutdowns, payment delays, and extended fund holds for merchants deemed high-risk by the industry.

The industry-wide crackdown follows an uptick in chargebacks, fraud, and money laundering concerns. Cross-border payments, in particular, face heightened scrutiny as processors align their internal policies with institutional banking requirements. In many cases, accounts are being flagged and suspended without the benefit of a traditional review process, with funds sometimes held for 90 days or longer.

Consultancy firm Compaytence identifies dropshippers, digital product sellers, and fast-scaling brands as the primary targets of these increased restrictions. Relying on a single payment processor is increasingly cited as a liability, particularly for companies operating across multiple regions.

To mitigate these risks, experts suggest diversifying payment service providers (PSPs) and refining internal chargeback resolution processes. As processors prioritize risk mitigation, merchants are urged to adopt more sophisticated financial structures to ensure their cash flow remains unaffected.
