PB Fintech shares reach annual low amid regulatory uncertainty

Shares of PB Fintech dropped to ₹928.10 on the BSE, marking a 48% decline in valuation since the IRDAI introduced a consultation paper regarding insurance distribution overhauls in September. The company's market capitalization has contracted significantly from $9.07 billion in early September to approximately $4.53 billion.

While the company reported a 42.5% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit to ₹192.4 crore and a 35% rise in operating revenue to ₹2,177.7 crore for Q2 FY27, the results failed to meet analyst expectations. Analysts at Dolat Capital noted that EBIT figures trailed estimates by over 30%, largely attributed to elevated advertising expenditures and broader operational costs.

Regulatory pressure remains the primary driver of investor sentiment. CEO Yashish Dahiya acknowledged that the company’s Point of Sale Person (PoSP) model may require restructuring if the IRDAI's proposed rules are finalized in their current form. Management has begun implementing cost-control measures, including a significant reduction in new hiring and a push for operational efficiency through artificial intelligence.

Brokerage firms remain divided on the outlook. While Bernstein maintains an outperform rating based on core growth metrics, firms like HSBC and Dolat Capital have lowered earnings estimates, citing long-term uncertainty regarding distribution payouts and regulatory impact on the firm's business model.
