Penetron Crystalline Technology Enhances Durability of Slovak Motorway Section
The newly completed D1 Hubová–Ivachnová motorway section in Slovakia improves northern transport links. Penetron's crystalline waterproofing technology was specified to enhance the durability of concrete elements in the project.

The D1 Hubová–Ivachnová motorway section, a significant infrastructure project in northern Slovakia, has been completed, enhancing a key east–west transport corridor. The approximately 14.9-km (9.2-miles) section bypasses Ružomberok, aiming to reduce urban traffic and improve network reliability.
The project involved constructing 19 bridge structures, three interchanges, and the 3.6 km Čebrať Tunnel. The mountainous terrain and harsh environmental conditions, including freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts, required robust concrete protection strategies for long-term performance.
Engineers specified Penetron's crystalline waterproofing technology for exposed concrete elements, such as bridge curbs. The technology penetrates the concrete, forming crystals that block pores and microcracks, thereby reducing permeability to water and aggressive chemicals like road salt.
Evgeniy Artukh, Director of Penetron Slovakia, stated that the system provides protection from within the concrete, improving resistance to harsh exposure and supporting a longer service life with reduced maintenance. The new motorway section is now open for traffic.
