Pennsylvania American Water asks customers to reduce nonessential water use during drought watch

Pennsylvania American Water is requesting customers across portions of its service territory to voluntarily reduce nonessential water consumption. This request follows a drought watch declaration expansion announced by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The company is asking residents and businesses to aim for a voluntary reduction of 10-15 percent in water use, equating to approximately 11-16 gallons per person daily. This voluntary conservation measure aligns with DEP guidance for areas experiencing drought conditions.

Four counties within the DEP's expanded drought advisory, including Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Lehigh, have been placed on a drought warning, the second of three state classifications. This designation is based on critical indicators such as precipitation, surface water flow, groundwater levels, and soil moisture.

Pennsylvania American Water provides resources for water conservation on its website, including tips for indoor and outdoor use. Recommendations include running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines, checking for and repairing leaks promptly, and installing water-saving devices. Customers are encouraged to be mindful of their usage and prepare for potential future conservation mandates.
