Pennsylvania reports cases of congenital measles amid state outbreak

The Pennsylvania Department of Health released a formal advisory this week to address a rise in measles cases during pregnancy, which has resulted in instances of congenital measles. Health officials noted that such cases have been absent in the region for decades, largely due to the effectiveness of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

As of October 19, state data shows 1,286 confirmed measles cases spread across 42 counties. The ongoing outbreak has resulted in 247 hospitalizations and six suspected deaths, with one fatality currently awaiting final investigation. Medical professionals are being issued new clinical guidelines for managing exposures and neonatal cases, as many providers have little experience with the virus.

Public health experts attribute the current spread to declining vaccination rates nationwide. The trend has created localized pockets of susceptibility, allowing the highly contagious virus to re-establish transmission in communities that previously achieved high immunity levels.
