Pentagon IG declines investigation into SpaceX service restrictions in Ukraine
The US Department of Defense inspector general will not investigate reported connectivity limits on SpaceX's Starlink network in Ukraine.

The Pentagon inspector general's office has declined a request from a bipartisan group of nine US senators to investigate service limitations recently placed on Ukraine’s military use of SpaceX’s Starlink and Starshield networks. Ukrainian officials reported earlier this month that military drones lost satellite connectivity when exceeding speeds of 161 kilometers per hour. SpaceX removed the restriction approximately 10 days after it was implemented.
In their October 15 letter to Inspector General Platte Moring, the senators requested a formal probe to determine whether the disruptions were directed by SpaceX or government entities. They sought clarity on whether the restrictions adhered to existing US government contracts and what steps the Department of Defense took to address the operational impact on Ukrainian forces.
By declining the investigation, the inspector general leaves unanswered questions regarding the governance of commercial satellite services in conflict zones. The incident underscores the complexities of relying on private technology providers for critical military operations.
