Pentecost holiday dates 2026 vary across German states
The Pentecost holidays in Germany for 2026 will have differing start and end dates across states. Some regions offer only a short break, while others provide extended periods off.
Pentecost holiday schedules for 2026 will differ significantly across Germany's federal states, ADAC has announced. While many families use the Pentecost break for travel, the duration of school holidays varies greatly.
In certain states, including Berlin, Brandenburg, Bremen, Lower Saxony, and North Rhine-Westphalia, students will receive only one extra day off in addition to the Pentecost Monday public holiday. This effectively means only the holiday weekend is free.
Other states offer longer breaks. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern starts its holidays early but concludes them quickly. Hamburg has a week-long break in mid-May, however, this does not coincide with Pentecost. Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg will have the longest Pentecost holidays, extending until early June.
Conversely, Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringia will not have specific Pentecost holidays for schoolchildren.
ADAC anticipates significant traffic congestion, particularly around the Pentecost weekend itself, from Friday, May 22, to Monday, May 25, 2026. Last year, the Friday of the Pentecost weekend was one of the busiest days of the year for traffic. Travelers departing from Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Saxony-Anhalt can particularly expect congestion heading south and towards coastal areas. To avoid traffic issues, consider the timing of travel or alternative routes, as restrictions are expected on certain Austrian motorways and on routes within Germany.
