Arlington, Va. – Companies are increasingly replacing the traditional annual performance review with a steady stream of feedback and check-ins, according to PerformYard's 2027 State of HR Report. The study, analyzing data from over 300,000 employees, indicates a significant shift in how organizations manage employee performance.

The report found that the number of questions in typical performance reviews has decreased, while the length of written employee responses has grown by 25%. This suggests a move towards more frequent, detailed interactions rather than a single, comprehensive annual assessment. Organizations that implement more "performance touchpoints"—including feedback, goal updates, and 1:1 meetings—throughout the year show higher review completion rates and better goal achievement.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly becoming a standard tool in performance management. In just one year, the use of AI for performance analysis has quadrupled, with over 50% of organizations now regularly employing AI. Larger companies are leading this adoption, with AI use enhancing, rather than replacing, manager feedback.

The report also highlights managers as a key bottleneck in the review process, particularly in larger teams. High-performing organizations are supporting their managers by facilitating frequent, shorter check-ins, which are proving more effective than relying solely on a lengthy annual review. This approach helps in developing teams more efficiently.

PerformYard recommends that organizations maintain concise reviews, introduce at least one mid-year review cycle, and integrate AI to improve managerial coaching capabilities and drive employee development.
