Perimenopause, menopause symptoms may cost employees nearly 35 workdays a year

Perimenopause and menopause symptoms can cost employed women an average of up to 35 workdays annually, according to a new survey by Womea. The study, which surveyed 831 women aged 45 and over, highlights the substantial impact of hormonal transitions on professional lives.

A significant issue is the lack of care, with up to 80% of women experiencing moderate to severe symptoms not seeking medical help. Symptoms such as hot flashes, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and brain fog can significantly hinder work. The most common disruptive symptoms reported were sleep issues and fatigue (63%), followed by difficulty concentrating (58%).

According to the survey, 87% of women stated that perimenopause or menopause symptoms disrupted their job performance over the past year. On average, women lost about an hour per workday managing symptoms, equating to 276 hours or 34.5 lost workdays annually. Consequently, 17% feel they have missed out on promotions, raises, or high-visibility projects.

Many women do not disclose their symptoms to employers due to fear of judgment or stigma. Only a small percentage (11%) reported having an employer policy addressing menopause or midlife health. The research underscores the necessity of normalizing these natural transitions in the workplace and providing support for working women.
