Pernod Ricard develops paper packaging to reduce carbon footprint
Pernod Ricard is implementing new paper packaging innovations for brands like Absolut vodka and Perrier-Jouët champagne as part of its sustainability goals.

Pernod Ricard is advancing its sustainability efforts by diversifying its packaging materials, focusing on paper-based solutions to reduce the carbon intensity of its products. The company aims for all its packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable by 2025.
The company is addressing packaging's significant environmental impact through redesign and exploration of new materials. These efforts include a partnership with the Paper Bottle Company to develop a paper bottle for Absolut vodka and the introduction of an eco-designed gift box, the Ecobox, for Maison Perrier-Jouët.
Maison Perrier-Jouët's Ecobox is constructed entirely from natural fibers sourced from FSC-certified forests. The packaging is 30% lighter than previous versions and features a minimalist design to minimize ink usage. Launched in 2020, the Ecobox aligns with the brand's objective to have its entire gifting offer eco-designed by 2022.
The Absolut Company is also collaborating on paper bottle prototypes. This initiative, involving Paboco (Paper Bottle Company) and other consumer goods firms, has produced a design using biodegradable FSC-certified paper with a barrier made from recycled plastic. The long-term goal is to increase paper content and develop fully recyclable, bio-based bottles.
