Pernod Ricard has officially launched The Chuan, a single malt whisky produced at its new distillery in Emeishan, Sichuan province. This release signifies the company's first prestige malt whisky to be manufactured in China, aiming to cater to the increasing sophistication of Chinese consumers' palates.
The company plans a phased rollout of The Chuan across China through selective distribution channels. This move reflects Pernod Ricard's long-term commitment to the Chinese market, where it has been present for decades with brands like Martell cognac and Chivas Regal Scotch whisky.
"The inauguration of The Chuan distillery is the culmination of an exceptional journey where we have combined the natural beauty of the Emeishan region with the expertise of our distillers to create a whisky we can be proud of," stated Alexandre Ricard, Chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard. Jérôme Cottin-Bizonne, General Manager of Pernod Ricard China, added that China is now on the global whisky map with this exceptional malt.
Alongside the whisky launch, Pernod Ricard has opened a visitor center at the distillery. The center provides an immersive introduction to the whisky-making process, tasting sessions, and a restaurant featuring Sichuan fusion cuisine. The distillery itself, designed by Chinese architecture firm Neri&Hu, emphasizes a timeless architectural style integrated with the surrounding landscape. The company also highlighted its commitment to sustainability, utilizing 100% renewable electricity and optimizing natural resource management throughout its operations.
