Perseverance Rover Sets New Distance Record on Mars
NASA's Perseverance rover will next week break the record for the longest distance driven by any vehicle on another world. The rover has already surpassed the previous record holder, Opportunity.
NASA's Perseverance rover is set to break the record for the most distance driven by any vehicle on another world sometime next week. The car-sized rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021, will surpass 45.16 km (28.06 miles) across the Martian surface.
In doing so, Perseverance will overtake the previous record held by the long-lived Opportunity rover, which ceased communications with NASA in 2018. Perseverance has achieved its record-setting distance in just a third of the time it took Opportunity to reach its own milestone.
Perseverance has been exploring the Jezero Crater and its surroundings, tasked with searching for signs of ancient microbial life. Its collection of geological samples and studies of Mars' atmosphere are central to the mission's scientific objectives.
The rover's successful traversal and extended operational period highlight NASA's expertise in robotics and engineering. Perseverance will continue its exploration of the challenging Martian terrain.
