Persona AI Focuses Humanoid Robots on Skilled Trades, Not Warehouses

Persona AI, a company developing humanoid robots, has strategically aligned its focus on skilled trades within heavy industry, diverging from the common pursuit of warehouse automation. Company leadership, including CEO Nicolaus Radford and CTO Jerry Pratt, believes the economic viability for humanoids lies in areas with significant labor shortages and a high demand for specific skills, such as welding in shipyards.

The company argues that tasks like moving boxes are already addressed by cost-effective automated solutions. Persona AI's humanoids are engineered for intricate tool use rather than simple material handling. The objective is to create robots capable of performing complex operations, like arc welding in challenging conditions characterized by smoke and intense light, directly addressing bottlenecks caused by a scarcity of skilled welders.

The legged design of Persona AI's humanoids is also a deliberate choice. Shipyards and similar industrial sites are built for human access, featuring stairs, catwalks, and varied terrain. While wheeled systems often necessitate environmental modifications, legged robots can navigate these spaces following human-like paths. This approach reduces costs, as adapting a site for machinery can be more expensive than deploying robots suited to the existing environment.

Persona AI has demonstrated these robots' capabilities, with a Gen 2 unit successfully performing a welding task at ARC Specialties in Houston in July 2026. This operation was teleoperated, a method the company employs to gather training data essential for future autonomous operation. The company is also collaborating with major industrial players, including HD Hyundai, ABS, and POSCO, to develop and deploy welding robots for shipyards and other heavy industrial settings.
