Peter Maffay Celebrates 75th Birthday: A German Music Legend's Career

German artist Peter Maffay, one of the country's most successful performers, is celebrating his 75th birthday. Maffay's career, which began in the early 1970s with the Schlager hit "Du," later transitioned successfully into German rock.

Maffay's breakthrough as a rock artist came with the 1979 album "Steppenwolf." Since then, he has sold over 50 million records and produced numerous number-one albums. His music has connected generations, as evidenced by his performance on "The Voice of Germany," where he performed "Nessaja" with a contestant and their grandfather.

Beyond his musical career, Maffay is recognized for his social commitment. In 2000, he founded the Peter Maffay Foundation, which supports disadvantaged children in Germany, Spain, and Romania by providing them with nature-based retreats and opportunities to regain strength. He has also been active in environmental and peace initiatives and has worked against racism.

Maffay's creation, the character of the young dragon Tabaluga, has been popular for over 40 years and symbolizes cross-generational music and storytelling.
