Pfizer and BioNTech to Supply EU with Additional 100 Million Vaccine Doses
Pfizer and BioNTech announced they will supply an additional 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine, Comirnaty, to the European Union. This brings the total number of doses to be delivered to the EU to 300 million.
Pfizer Inc. and BioNTech SE announced on December 29, 2020, that they will supply an additional 100 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine, COMIRNATY, to the 27 member states of the European Union in 2021. This decision follows the European Commission's exercise of its option to purchase more doses under an existing agreement, bringing the total number of doses to be delivered to the EU to 300 million. All 300 million doses are expected to be delivered in 2020 and 2021.
The additional supply aims to address the growing demand for vaccines in Europe amidst the ongoing spread of the virus. The doses will be manufactured at BioNTech's and Pfizer's production sites in Europe. The original agreement for 200 million doses was signed on November 11, 2020, with an option for the European Commission to request an additional 100 million doses.
Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla stated that the companies remain committed to providing the vaccine as quickly and safely as possible to more people in Europe. BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin added that the additional doses will support the vaccination campaigns already underway in all 27 member states.
Pfizer and BioNTech have previously indicated a potential to supply up to 1.3 billion doses globally by the end of 2021, subject to manufacturing capacity.
