New York/Mainz – Pfizer and BioNTech have agreed to supply the U.S. government with an additional 50 million doses of their COVID-19 vaccine, according to an announcement made on October 28, 2021.

The additional doses are earmarked to support the U.S. preparedness for pediatric vaccinations, including securing vaccines for children under the age of five, pending regulatory authorization. The companies expect to deliver all ordered doses by April 30, 2022.

This latest purchase brings the total number of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine doses secured by the U.S. government under its existing agreement to 600 million. This total includes doses for adults and adolescents. Additionally, the companies are committed to providing one billion doses to the U.S. government at a not-for-profit price for donation to low- and lower-middle-income countries.

Pfizer and BioNTech have submitted a request to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency use authorization of their vaccine for children aged 5 to <12 years. The dosage for this age group is 10 micrograms, differing from the 30-microgram dose for individuals 12 and older. Initial data from ongoing clinical trials for children under five are expected by late 2021 or early 2022.
