Pfizer and Clear Creek Bio to Collaborate on SARS-CoV-2 Protease Inhibitor Research

Pfizer Inc. and Clear Creek Bio, Inc. announced a research collaboration and exclusive license agreement focused on developing new treatments for COVID-19.

The partnership aims to discover and advance inhibitors of the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PLpro), an enzyme crucial for viral replication. This collaboration seeks to create a new class of oral antiviral medications.

PLpro, alongside the virus's main protease, is essential for the virus's ability to replicate. This initiative is expected to broaden Pfizer's anti-infective pipeline and complement its existing COVID-19 product offerings with agents targeting different viral mechanisms.

Pfizer highlighted the ongoing need for antiviral therapies, noting that COVID-19 may remain a global health concern for years. The company aims to stay ahead of the virus through continued clinical development and strategic partnerships.

Clear Creek Bio identified PLpro as a promising target and has developed potent inhibitors internally. Under the agreement, Clear Creek Bio will receive an upfront payment and potential milestone payments and royalties. Pfizer will lead further development and commercialization efforts for any identified candidate.
