In March 2018, pharmaceutical company Pfizer Inc. announced a collaboration with Hubrecht Organoid Technology (HUB). The partnership is focused on developing a Human Gut Organoid Technology Platform. This platform is intended to support research into potential new treatments for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), a group of disorders that affect the digestive tract.

Organoids are miniature organs grown in cell cultures from patient biopsies, designed to accurately mimic the genetic and phenotypic characteristics of the original tissue. The goal of this collaboration is to create an IBD-specific organoid platform that could assist in identifying new drug targets and screening potential therapies.

IBD, which includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is known to be influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and microbial factors. The development of a more relevant model system like organoids is seen as crucial for understanding these multifactorial diseases.

This research initiative is expected to provide Pfizer with advanced tools for its IBD research pipeline. The collaboration leverages HUB's expertise in growing and characterizing organoids, aiming to accelerate the discovery and development of novel therapeutic strategies for patients suffering from inflammatory bowel conditions.
