Pfizer and WAVE Life Sciences to Develop Gene-Targeted Therapies for Metabolic Diseases
Pfizer Inc. has entered into a collaboration with WAVE Life Sciences to develop nucleic acid therapies for metabolic diseases. The partnership combines proprietary technologies for enhanced liver targeting and therapeutic delivery.

Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE) has announced a research, license, and option agreement with WAVE Life Sciences Ltd. to develop novel nucleic acid therapies aimed at addressing the root causes of metabolic diseases. The collaboration will focus on genetically defined targets, leveraging both companies' expertise in drug development and delivery.
The agreement brings together WAVE's proprietary stereopure drug development platform, encompassing antisense and RNAi modalities, with Pfizer's GalNAc and hepatic targeting technology. This integration is designed to optimize the delivery of therapeutics to the liver, a key organ for metabolic regulation, and enhance their efficacy and safety.
WAVE Life Sciences will advance up to five programs through to clinical candidate selection. Following this stage, Pfizer has the option to exclusively license the programs for further development and commercialization. The deal includes an upfront payment of $40 million to WAVE, with potential milestone payments and royalties totaling up to $871 million if all five programs are successfully commercialized.
This partnership underscores a growing trend in the pharmaceutical industry to harness advanced biotechnologies, such as oligonucleotide therapeutics, for complex conditions. By combining Wave's platform with Pfizer's established capabilities, the companies aim to create new treatment options for patients suffering from genetically driven metabolic disorders.
