Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc. has announced a strategic research collaboration with XtalPi Inc., a company focused on computation-driven pharmaceutical technology. The partnership aims to develop a novel software platform that combines physics-based approaches with artificial intelligence (AI) for enhanced molecular modeling of small drug-like molecules.

The new platform is designed to integrate quantum mechanics and machine learning algorithms within a cloud computing architecture. This approach is intended to improve the accuracy and scope of molecular mechanics modeling, enabling more precise prediction of pharmaceutical properties crucial for drug discovery and development. The collaboration builds upon XtalPi's existing relationship with Pfizer concerning crystal structure prediction.

As part of the initiative, certain molecular mechanics parameters generated using public-domain compounds will be shared with the academic community to foster scientific innovation. Charlotte Allerton, Pfizer's Head of Medicine Design, stated the collaboration is "an opportunity to enhance our computational modeling capabilities" and expressed anticipation for new tools to increase effectiveness in small molecule drug discovery.

Shuhao Wen, XtalPi's Co-founder and Chairman, highlighted that the partnership allows the application of their expertise in molecular modeling, AI, and cloud computing. The goal is to refine existing computational methods and explore new algorithms to address drug design challenges, ultimately accelerating the research into novel therapeutics.
