Pharmaceutical innovations generate societal value, study finds

A new study by the Institute for Pharmaceutical Economic Research (IPF) in Vienna challenges the common perception of pharmaceutical innovations as merely a cost issue. The research suggests that innovative medicines and vaccines create substantial overall societal value that should not be underestimated.

The research examined five therapeutic areas: melanoma, inflammatory bowel disease, hemophilia, shingles, and mental health disorders. By analyzing various scenarios, including increased treatment and vaccination rates, IPF estimates that innovative therapies can lead to significant savings in healthcare and social security systems, as well as stimulate economic growth.

According to the study, the benefits of pharmaceutical innovations extend from improved quality of life and increased life expectancy for patients and their families to greater efficiency within the healthcare system. Innovative treatments can reduce complications, hospitalizations, and costly follow-up care, thereby freeing up resources for more effective allocation.

On a macroeconomic level, the study highlights that pharmaceutical innovations strengthen the pharmaceutical industry, a sector crucial for innovation, value creation, and future growth. This generates highly skilled jobs and supports research and science, enhancing a country's international competitiveness. "The health and economy of a country are mutually dependent," stated Dr. Evelyn Walter, CEO of IPF. "A healthy population contributes decisively to the well-being of a social and economic system."

The study calls for a shift in perspective: healthcare expenditures should be viewed as an investment in the future. Merely focusing on the costs of pharmaceutical innovations is, according to the study, a significant miscalculation that not only harms affected individuals but also diminishes societal prosperity.
