Phia Accused of Affiliate Marketing Fraud; Phoebe Gates Co-Founder

Phia, an AI-powered shopping assistant startup co-founded by Phoebe Gates, daughter of Bill and Melinda Gates, is reportedly facing accusations of affiliate marketing fraud. According to a Bloomberg report, the company allegedly employed a tactic known as 'cookie stuffing' for an extended period, impacting major retailers.

Cookie stuffing involves the fraudulent use of website cookies, which are small data files stored in a user's web browser. Phia's browser extension is designed to help users find coupons and discounts. The company earns commissions from retailers when a sale is completed through its service. However, the allegations state that Phia's extension would claim credit for sales even when the user did not complete the purchase or take a required action that would typically entitle Phia to a commission.

This practice can lead to significant revenue losses for retailers and may carry legal consequences, including charges of wire fraud. Phoebe Gates, 23, and co-founder Sophia Kianni are reportedly named in the allegations that Phia knowingly engaged in these tactics for months, affecting brands such as Nike and Nordstrom.

While affiliate marketing is a common practice, cookie stuffing is a known form of fraud within the industry. This is not the first time such schemes have led to legal action. In 2014, the former CEO of a software company received a prison sentence and fine for a similar cookie-stuffing scheme targeting eBay. Most legitimate affiliate marketing programs explicitly prohibit this practice.
