BERLIN – Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is reshuffling his government, appointing CDU politician Philipp Amthor as a state minister at the Federal Chancellery. Amthor, 33, will be responsible for coordinating cooperation between the federal government and the German states.
At a press conference, Merz highlighted Amthor's experience in digitalization initiatives and the coordination of federal modernization efforts. As state minister, Amthor will report directly to the Head of the Chancellery and subsequently to the Chancellor. The position is crucial as state approval, often via the Bundesrat (Federal Council), is necessary for federal legislation.
The government changes extend to other key positions. The current Federal Minister of Health will become Head of the Chancellery, with CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann succeeding them in the health ministry. Media reports suggest Hamburg Member of Parliament Franziska Hoppermann may be appointed CDU General Secretary, though this remains unconfirmed.
Amthor expressed gratitude for the new, challenging role and looks forward to advancing reform agendas. Merz indicated that further government appointments will be announced in the coming days. CDU party committees are scheduled to meet on Monday to discuss potential internal appointments.
