Philippines: Emergency Aid Deployed After Typhoon Kalmaegi

Emergency aid is being deployed in the Philippines this weekend following the extensive destruction caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi. The archipelago is facing the threat of another super typhoon even as recovery efforts begin. The German aid organization Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe, working with local partner Ecoweb, is providing assistance to residents in the city of Cebu affected by the storm.

Typhoon Kalmaegi inflicted significant damage across the Philippines. Numerous homes were destroyed, and authorities reported at least 114 fatalities. Half a million people have been displaced from their homes.

"The destruction from Typhoon Kalmaegi is immense, and now we are threatened by the next super typhoon, Fung-Wong," stated Simone Walter, Help's emergency aid coordinator. The new storm is expected to make landfall between Sunday and Monday. The organization and its partner are working urgently to reach the most vulnerable families and areas.

Tropical storms are increasingly frequent and intense in the Philippines due to the climate crisis. "The Philippines is one of the countries most severely affected by the consequences of the climate catastrophe globally," Walter noted. "Each year, stronger storms cause unimaginable devastation. People have very little breathing room to recover from disasters and rebuild their lives and infrastructure."
