Philippines Tourism and Health Departments to Establish Tourist First Aid Facilities

The Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Department of Health (DOH) have formalized a partnership to establish the Philippines' first dedicated first aid facilities for tourists. This collaboration, also involving the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), aims to improve safety protocols and provide immediate medical assistance to visitors experiencing accidents or injuries.

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco and Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, Jr. signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 29 in Makati City. The agreement emphasizes the critical role of health, safety, and security in sustainable and competitive tourism, aligning with international tourism standards.

The initial batch of facilities will be strategically located in high-tourism areas, including La Union, Boracay Island, Siargao Island, Panglao Island, Palawan, and Puerto Galera. La Union is slated to be the first location to break ground, with construction expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2025. TIEZA will oversee the design and construction of these centers.

These facilities will be staffed by qualified healthcare professionals, such as physicians and nurses, and equipped with essential medical supplies to ensure prompt emergency response. Additionally, the sites may incorporate lifeguard stations or viewing decks to enhance overall tourist safety and oversight.
