Photodynamic Therapy Integrated into Daily Oral Care

Koite Health Ltd. has launched a new oral hygiene product incorporating photodynamic therapy (PDT) to combat bacteria. Originally discovered in 1900, PDT involves using light-sensitizing molecules that, when activated by light, produce reactive oxygen species to destroy bacteria.

Historically, PDT has been primarily used in medical settings and as a specialized dental treatment. However, with the rise of antimicrobial resistance, interest in PDT has resurfaced due to its effectiveness against bacterial biofilms, a key factor in dental plaque, and its inherent lack of resistance development.

The Lumoral method, developed by Koite Health, leverages modern LED technology to make PDT accessible as part of a daily oral care routine. The company states that the method is safe and effective for preventing and treating oral diseases, citing clinical studies that recommend regular use.

Research into PDT has significantly increased over the past 15 years, particularly in dentistry, focusing on treatments for conditions like periodontal disease. Koite Health aims to provide an accessible, non-adverse, and resistance-free solution for maintaining oral health through this clinically validated technology.
