Physical AI Emerges as Top Investment Trend

The venture capital landscape is undergoing a significant shift, with investment focus moving beyond chatbots to physical artificial intelligence. In 2026, startups specializing in physical AI have attracted unprecedented levels of funding.

Physical AI encompasses systems designed to sense, reason, and act within the physical world. This includes humanoid robots, warehouse automation, autonomous vehicles, industrial drones, and the underlying chips and simulation tools. Investment in this sector has grown substantially, with approximately $27.6 billion invested in robotics and physical AI startups in 2025, more than double the amount from 2024.

During the first quarter of 2026 alone, 27 physical AI startups collectively raised over $6.4 billion. In June 2026, three companies developing "world models" secured $12.6 billion within a nine-day period. Capital allocation in that quarter was split almost evenly between robotics and AI chips or inference hardware.

While the majority of these investments have been directed towards U.S.-based startups, Europe has also attracted significant capital. Major technology firms such as Nvidia, Microsoft, and SoftBank are backing the sector's advancement. Investors are betting not only on the physical embodiment of robots but also on the specialized silicon required to power them, which offers greater power efficiency than traditional data center GPUs.

The rapid development and investment in physical AI are poised to significantly impact industries such as manufacturing, logistics, and transportation in the coming years.
